Folk arts are national comprehensive stage performing arts in the world. Japan, Korea, Mongolia and other countries have their own folk arts forms. Chinese folk arts have a long history and play an important role in people’s cultural life, occupying an important position in Chinese arts construction. Today, due to the impact of foreign culture, the development of Chinese folk arts has encountered some difficulties, becoming a hot issue which is the focus of professionals who love ethnic arts. It is imperative to explore the development law of folk arts, so as to provide a theoretical reference for the practice.This paper focuses on the explanation of folk arts’ development, to seek the developing theory and to reveal the objective development law of folk arts. It is a multidisciplinary research, referring folk arts, cultural ecology, and artistic culture studies. It is divided into seven parts: introduction, including the analysis of the former research and development of folk arts, which explains the theoretical basis of the research and limits the research content; the first chapter, describing the development orientation of folk arts, exploring the artistic nature and aesthetic features based on the previous research results; the second chapter, exploring the production and development of folk arts, combining with the human evolution; the third chapter, analyzing the transmutation of folk arts manifestations from the opera stage to radio, television, new media, based on developments of modern communication media; the fourth chapter, studying the development of folk arts subject, analyzing folk arts’ text composition system, performances, audience, and theoretical critics, the role of each plays in the folk arts system, the interaction with each other, and their mutual influence; the fifth chapter, analyzing the environment for the development of folk arts, its status and roles in arts and culture, discussing the differences and relations with other arts forms, the coordination and harmonious interaction between folk arts and material culture, institutional culture and spiritual culture in the terms of philosophy, ethics, religion, and science; the sixth chapter, summarizing the development law of folk arts, making the conclusion that folk arts and its developing environment have a harmonious development through the improvement and adaptation, to maintain a smooth operation of arts in order to achieve the ecological and sustainable development of folk arts.
