In recent years,with the increasing influence of Chinese culture,more and more foreigners are interested in Chinese culture.As the indispensable part of folk culture,folk arts display the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture.Translators should take the responsibility to spread Chinese culture and enhance the cultural communication among different countries.Therefore,the translation of Compendium of Folk Arts will greatly contribute to the spread of Chinese folk culture.Compendium of Folk Arts is China?s first theoretical monograph about folk arts.It systematically sorts out the folk arts and discusses a series of academic issues,such as the origin of Chinese folk arts thought,the forms of folk arts,the aesthetic characteristics of folk arts,the way of communication,and the comparison of cultures,which provides rich materials for readers at home and abroad who are interested in the development of Chinese folk arts.However,by now,there is no English translation for Compendium of Folk Arts,and it is reasonable to select this book?s translation as the analysis object for the report,which can provide a case reference for the translation of related texts.The first two sections of Chapter Six in Compendium of Folk Arts were chosen as the source text in this report.There are a lot of folk arts terms,the names of ethnic groups and geographical names as well as long sentences and passive sentences which need to be focused on.With the guidance of Li Changshuan?s “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”,efforts were made to accurately understand the source text and properly express the translation by analyzing the linguistic features of the source text,meticulously recording the difficulties encountered in translation and looking for a large number of materials and plenty of information by dictionaries,parallel texts,professional books,literature and official documents,in order to provide reference for the translation of related texts and promote the spread of Chinese culture.To conclude,in comprehension,related professional books and literature can be found in library or the Internet to learn the knowledge of folk arts terms;in terms of sentences containing multiple modifiers,words collocation and context can help to understand the source text properly.In expression,the translation of vocabulary and sentences were discussed.In vocabulary,Pinyin with annotation can be adopted to deal with the translation of folk arts terms with Chinese characteristics and geographical names,which can not only convey information accurately but also keep Chinese phonetic features.In sentences,splitting and combination can be used to deal with long sentence translation,and sentences containing passive meaning in the source text can be translated into passive voice according to English expression.In adaptation,amplification,omission and reconstruction can be used to add,delete or reorganize information appropriately according to the context,ensuring that the target text is faithful to the source text.
