Research On The Creation Of Prose In Beidao Under The Context Of Exile

In order to owing the right of saying, Beidao emigrated since the late 1980s and embark on the road of exile for nearly twenty years. His creation can be divided into two stages according to the time Beidao left the mainland. In the earlier stage, his main focus is poetry and in the later, he write prose and poetry at the same time. Beidao’s prose was produced in the unique context of exile. In the form of prose, Beidao shows the reader with his special wandering experience,a wide range of relationships and the unique insights on life,which gives his prose a new spirit. This paper based on his prose collections published by now and treat all these prose as an independent literary activities to analyze. The full text consists of five chapters.The first chapter analyze Beidao’s self-imposed exile and the significance of the exile to his creation. Meanwhile we’ll make a more complete overview of his prose.The second chapter is related to the inner spiritual structure in all these prose collections, which is "exile" and’"return". In terms of Beidao, "exile"has two meanings, one is physical level,another is spiritual level. The former refers to the individual body separated from the motherland and become a eternal wanderer. The latter mains there is nowhere to put one’s spirit, not only including the escape of ideology in the earlier stage,but also including the inner spiritual emptiness when he became an exile in its true sense. If the writing of exile means’"travel", then the writing of memory is "return". Beidao is trying to return to his childhood experiences in which to build his spiritual home.The third chapter regarding to Beidao prose’s ethos. Spirit is often seen as the soul of the prose. Compared with the strong personality in his early poetry, the emotional concentration decreased in prose, some new ethos appeared however. Firstly, Beidao has a new understanding on the Chinese traditional culture and which has influenced his prose creation to a great degree. Secondly is about poetic spirit, the poets and poetry translation in his prose are the reflection of "the spirit of 1980s poem". Thirdly, Beidao has a accurate grasp of the spiritual meaning of the intellectuals. All the above three points condense into a solid core in Beidao’s prose.The fouth chapter is catch the "constant" in Beidao’s prose creation. He tries to think about the relationship between exile writer and mother tongue. With loyalty to native language, Beidao overcome spiritual emptiness and status anxiety which is brought from exile. Meanwhile, Beidao never forget his poet identity when he writes prose. He even create a new literary form in his essay "rose of time",in which he is trying to break the boundaries between poetry and prose. He not only explain the poetry translation in this essay, but also showing us his personal opinion on the translation.The fifth party attempt to summarize the value and significance of Beidao’s prose from three different levels. First of all, put the prose in his all writing career. The second is to see Beidao’s creation is how to go beyond the constraints of time and resonate with those great writers by placing it in exile- writer groups. And then from the essaay system in China since 1910s to evaluate Beidao’s inheritance and innovation. At last,make an overall evaluation of Beidao’s prose.
