Adapting literary classics into dance dramas is conducive to meet the expectation of the public entering theatres to appreciate the artistic beauty of dance drama. It weakens the audience’s psychological barriers with the incapability of dance in telling complex stories, uses dance thinking to express the personality of characters and their psychology, changes between reality and psychology, and develops the plot through body language to convey the connotations pursued by literary classics and to gain both inner and outer perception of art. Their ingenious fusion and mutual complementation is a good dance drama’s long-term strong background support. It is necessary to rebuild the drama structure, insert in the director’s own views of art and show the essence of literary classics via means of dancing and drama.Taking the major parts in the creation process of the dance drama Red Sorghum as an example, the paper analyzes how to select the elements of drama from the original work, fully understand the spirit of it, extract character personality and essence from the work, and find out the internal impetus driving the development of the main plot. It also discusses how the choreographer can tell the story through dancing, express the personality of characters, show dramatic conflicts through dancing, adhere to dance thinking in the creation, inject style, exclude stereotypes, and personalize characters in dance dramas.
