Chinese Translation Of Complex Compound Sentences In English Financial Reports From The Perspective Of Functional Translation Theory

With development of globalization and market economy, the foreign financial reports have become the main channel to grasp global economic trends. Therefore, it is very necessary to study the translation principle of English financial report. The thesis integrates translation theory studies with pragmatic translation, applying functionalist translation theory to the translation of complex compound sentences in English financial report.German School of functionalist translation theory appeared in the1970s and there are four main stages:Katharina Reiss's functionalist translation criticism, Hans J. Vermeer's Skopostheorie, Justa Holz Manttari's translation action theory and Christiane Nord's text analysis model. Vermeer's Skopostheorie is the most significant among these theories. According to Skopostheorie,"Skopos rule" is the supreme rule and the translation action is decided by the purpose of it, which means "the end justifies the means".Through analysis and illustration, the thesis applied the Skopostheorie to exploring the translation principle of the complex compound sentences in English financial report. In terms of the English financial report, the translation should be clear, accurate, and easy to understand. From the macroscopic aspect, the reasons of translation, the recipients and the function of the translation should be defined first. From the microscopic view, it is necessary to analyze the syntactic features. After the study of the typical sentences, the conclusion that principles of translation are decided by the function of the translation can be reached.Although there have been many theses studying this field, few of them concentrating on translation of specific type of sentences. Under the frame of the functionalist theory and through the analysis of examples, the thesis puts forward principles of complex compound sentences'translation in English financial report, namely breaking long sentences, dividing the information sections, grasping the logic of relations, highlighting the main point, deleting unnecessary information, adding background information and comments after the fact. These methods can make long difficult sentences become simple, logical and accurate typical Chinese financial report.
