Objectives:The use of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)pattern differentiation in the treatment of Non-erosive Reflux Disease(NERD)has its unique advantage. The key to pattern differentiation and treatment is the understanding of syndromes of a disease.Hence, the study of the pattern differentiation of NERD is exceptionally important. This study is based on the foundations of TCM,through literature review, epidemiological and pattern differentiation studies, analysing the different syndrome distribution and its specificity with the use of several statistical methodology, thereby providing fundamental information for future studies.Methodology:Data from a total number of 277 participants suffering from NERD is collected(including socio-demographics,and TCM syndrome information)and recorded in excel form to create a database.SPSS21.0 was used to perform statistical analysis.Socio-demographic information and risk factors are analysed by relevant descriptive and exploratory statistics.Multivariate statistical methods are used to study the distributon, etiology and pathomechanism of syndrome with high distribution.Results:1.Socio-demographics:Socio-demographic and information from four diagnosis were collected from a total of 277 NERD patients,of which youngest at the age of 19,and oldest at the age of 75,with a mean age of 48.49±13.134,and median age of 51.Participants consist of 93 males and 184 females.Data analysis shows that:? Onset age characteristics:Highest incidence in the youth and middle age group,at 38%and 39%respectively;? Gender characterstics:incidence is higher in female than males,in the ratio of 0.51:1,of which incidence in middle-aged and elderly woman are significantly higher than male;? Weight characteristics:Occurs mostly to individuals with normal BMI,with an incidence of 55%;?Occupation characteristics:Incidence is higher in retirees and homemakers(44%),followed by administrators and managers, individuals working in commercial and service line, individuals working in private companies, with the incidence rate of 17%,15%and 14%respectively.?Dietary habits:Incidence is highest in oily and high fat diet(26%),strong tea(14%),spicy and pungent food(13%).?Emotional status:Incidence rate of abnormal emotional status is 76%,of which impatience and easily angered is the highest, with an incidence of 38.63%.?Seasonal characteristics:Mostly in Spring(37%).?Correlation with HP infection:HP(+)incidence rate of 82%.2.TCM syndrome:?Primary symptoms:Regurgitation(91%)and heartburn(84%);?Disease location:Primarily in Liver and Stomach, with a correlation with Spleen,Heart,Lung and Gall Bladder;? Disease characteristics:Differentiated into deficiency and excess.Deficiency includes Qi-deficiency and Yang-deficiency,excess includes turbid phlegm, food accumulation, damp heat, and blood stasis;?Syndrome distribution:Five main types:internal damp-heat,internal obstruction of phlegm and blood stasis, liver and stomach constraint heat, spleen and stomach deficient cold, liver and stomach disharmony.Conclusion:1.Prevalence of NERD is highest in youth and middle age, higher in females than males. The onset is influenced by emotions, seasonal changes, and HP infection. There is no observable correlation with weight, dietary habits, and sleep quality.2.TCM syndrome:Main symptoms Presented by NERD patients are regurgitation, heartburn;disease location:Primary at liver and stomach, certain correlation with spleen, heart, lung, and gall bladder.Disease characteristics:Differentiated into deficiency and excess.Deficiency includes Qi-deficiency and Yang-deficiency,excess includes turbid phlegm, food accumulation, damp heat, and blood stasis.Syndrome distribution:Five main types:internal damp-heat,internal obstruction of phlegm and blood stasis, liver and stomach constraint heat, spleen and stomach deficient cold, liver and stomach disharmony.
