Objectives:To verify the pathological effect of qingzhi in the development of mental disorders,to discuss if different qingzhi have different effects or induce different disorders.Understanding the mechanism of mental disorders is helpful to prevent and treat them. Also to discuss the rules of qingzhi disease induction and the relations between qingzhi,to verify hypothesis like "a qingzhi damages its own organ" or qingzhi evolutions following the rules of five movements domination and production. Methods:This study is a transversal questionnaire survey with a cohort control design. The open-ended questionnaire "outline homework" was given to 434 outpatient mental disorder patients and 50 casual people, after collecting and screening the questionnaire answers,388 effective questionnaires were collected. One the one hand a quantitative analysis was run:the baseline of the patient group and the control group was aligned for age and sex, then the number of characters and words frequency related to qingzhi were calculated, and SPSS 22.0 was used to test if there was a difference between the two groups. On the other hand,a qualitative analysis was done:50 patients' questionnaires were coded for qingzhi induced symptoms, shifts between qingzhi and simultaneous qingzhi, the results were analyzed and synthesized, then a part of the results was quantified and analyzed with SPSS 22.0.Results:1.No significant difference(P>0.05)was found on "five zhi" related words frequency between the mental disorder patients group and the control group;the proportion of characters about "joy" was lower(P<0.005)in the patients group;the proportions of characters about "sadness" and the "anger" related words frequency was higher(P<0.005)in the patients group.Among the mental disorder patients, the proportion of characters about"sadness",the difference between proportions of characters about "fear" and "sadness",the difference between proportions of characters about "joy" and "sadness",the "fear" related words frequency, the difference between "fear" and "sadness" related words frequency and the difference between yang qingzhi and yin qingzhi were significantly different between some disease groups(P<0.05 or 0.005).2.Four qingzhi inducing symptoms were found in the specimen:sadness, anger, fear, and yearning(si),no symptom directly induced by thinking(si)was found, but could reinforce mutually with other qingzhi and be commonly pathological;the most symptom inducing qingzhi was fear, and the most induced symptom was insomnia;there was no significant difference between the organs damaged by qingzhi between sadness, fear and anger(P>0.05);the common pathological mechanisms of qingzhi are congestion, fire, deficiency, and wind, but every qingzhi has pathological specificities.3,No dominant type of five movement production or domination relation was found in qingzhi shifts or simultaneous qingzhi in the sample;almost all the qingzhi shifts happened between yin qingzhi and yang qingzhi, and the simultaneous qingzhi happened mainly between qingzhi of same yin-yang nature;anger was the frequent and most broadly related qingzhi in qingzhi shifts.Conclusions:1.Qingzhi experiences may not be important factors of mental disorders by themselves, but the type of qingzhi experience and the proportions of different qingzhi experiences may factors of mental disorders, and could also affect the type of disease induced.2.The pathological effect of negative qingzhi can be aggravated by a lack of positive qingzhi or combinations of negative qingzhi.3.This study doesn't support "a qingzhi damages its own organ" or qingzhi evolutions following the rules of five movements domination and production hypothesis, more evidence is needed.4.The five movements theory seems to not explain well the relations between qingzhi, but yin-yang theory can.5."anger" and "thinking"have special positions among qingzhi,"anger" is a pivot of qingzhi shifts, and "thinking" can produce or change other qingzhi.
