Berberis Linn. is a part of the Berberidaceae, which has about 500 species in the world, and are mainly distributed in north temperate zone, but this genus is the only one genus of the Berberidaceae that distributed in Africa mountainous areas of torrid zone and South America, and the only one genus that differentiation in the dry areas too. About 250 species all over China and mainly distributed in the south and south west of China. Flora of Guizhou, which published in 2004, records 26 species and 1 variety species, but, many new species and new documentries are discovered constently in recent years, according to the statistics, as many as 45 species and 1 variety species of Berberis have been record in Guizhou until now. Our study has taken a systematic taxonomy investigation on Berberis of Guizhou which includes observing the documentaries, consulting the herbarium, wild investigation, collecting the samples and morphological study, and then make certain of the genus of Berberis and distributions in Guizhou. The results show that,32 species and 2 variety species of genus Berberis distributed in Guizhou at present and adding 6 species and 1 variety species which include Berberis panxianensis S. Z. He et Y. Wang, sp. nov., B. pingbaensis M. T. An, B. wuchuanensis Harber and S. Z. He, B. levis Franch., B. uniflora F. N. Wei et Y. G Wei, B. sanguinea Franch. and B. pruinosa Franch. var. barresiana Ahrendt. Among the species, B. panxianensis is a new species proposed, B. uniflora, B. sanguinea and B. pruinosa var. barresiana are new documentries that first discovered in Guizhou, B. ziyunensis Hsiao et Z. Y. Li is restored to be an independent species,13 other species were misidentification or false record that did not distribute in Guizhou which are B. wangii Schneid, B. lepidifolia Ahrendt, B. weixiensis C. Y. Wu ex S. Y. Bao, B. metopolyantha Ahrendt, B. chunanensis Ying, B. pollens Franch., B. tischleri Schneid., B. coryi Veitch, B. liophylla Schneid., B. vernalis (Schneid.) Chamberlain et C. M. Hu, B. dumicola Schneid., B. francisci-ferdinandi Schneid and B. weixinensis S. Y. Bao. Besides revising the morphological characters and distributions of some species and building a new key to the species.Leaf venation that include leaf pattern and tooth character of 30 species,2 variety species and 1 questionable species of Berberis are reported for the first time to search new taxonomic evidences and make a study of it’s systematic significance in Berberis, besides add the basic leaf venation datas of the Berberis. A key to the species of Berberis in Guizhou is presented based on the leaf venation characters with main diagnostic morphologically, provide a new basis for identification and make a comparison of the similar species.
