Changing the way of people consumption coupled with an ever-increasing standard of living inevitably demands that the level of service in society be raised accordingly to match such development and improvement. When people go out on a sightseeing tour or to enjoy various other forms of entertainment, one of the major factors that limit their ability to make travel arrangements before departure as they please is whether they can store and retrieve their personal belongings securely, cheaply and conveniently. To enter the Tiananmen Square in Beijing for a stroll or sightseeing tour, for instance, peop need to check their baggage first, because of special security measures and rules implemented or enforced there on account of its status as a politically sensitive place.A huge demand, therefore, exists for services through which tourists can store and retrieve their baggage efficiently and quickly. At present, baggage storage and retrieval functions are mostly carried out at home and abroad either by implementing a manned system,or by using a special electronic cabinet for small items,or by running a self-service facility.Of the three major approaches to baggage storage and retrieval, implementing a manned system is most traditional and requires a manned counter which manually processes most of the baggage. This way of check bags has such problems as low efficiency, high operating costs, and low security. The system will have to be very small in scale or will be able to process only small items if an electronic cabinet for small items or a self-service facility is used,in which case no acceptable level of security can be guaranteed. As modern logistic and automation technology has developed rapidly in recent years, the traditional conveyance and storage systems are becoming more and more automatic and smarter.Highly automated warehouses and automatic conveyance systems are now being widely applied in all kinds of businesses, gradually replacing the traditional warehouse, which is outdated, occupies a rather large area, and relies solely on manual handling. In fact, such modern facilities and systems are presently transforming China's traditional warehousing landscape where "dirtiness, disorganization, and poor management" used to prevail. The latest developments and advances in the automation technology used in modern logistics provide a great deal of inspiration for the design of automated baggage storage and retrieval systems.Currently, automation technology still has lots of room for further research into baggage storage and retrieval applications, although not so in tobacco, medicine, highly automated garages, and other areas, where its application has already brought significant social and economic benefits to the businesses involved in those areas. In fact, some successful cases of its application in those areas provide excellent guidance for the design of automated storage and retrieval service systems in this article.Based on these facts, this article discusses an all-around approach to improving the traditional method of manually storing and retrieving baggage by AS/RS technology, and computer-enabled information management technology in an effort to introduce modern logistics-oriented automation technology and highly automated warehousing technology into the traditional manned counter service. It also demonstrates that an efficient, secure, smart, and economic solution can be realized by combining both domestic and foreign computer-enabled operating and automation technology. In the end, this article uses the Auto Mod simulation tool to simulate and optimize the system it has envisioned, while solving many of the problems associated with the three major approaches to baggage storage and retrieval. In summary, this article offers a solution that not only helps upgrade the baggage storage and retrieval business but also improves its service, conserves society's resources, and creates opportunities for greener economic growth.
