With development of container terminal industry in China for decades, the terminal management efficiency and production efficiency, which are encountered bottleneck, must solve the current problems by optimizing with the production process and management mode.With rapid development of container terminal's technology, for the traditional container terminals the efficiency, management and security have been unable to meet the requirements of modern port enterprises. Based on that, the Qingdao Port Group (QPG) started to prepare for the construction of the Asian first fully automated container terminal in 2013. For QPG building fully automated container terminal, the basic goals are to break through the current production bottlenecks, improve the safety of terminal operating production efficiency and reduce cost of port operation. To achieve these goals, in addition to introducing the corresponding software system and automation equipment, terminal layout design and operation process need to be optimized and reengineering. If automation terminal yard layout runs still with the concept of the traditional layout design, its operation efficiency and service quality will be greatly affected. Therefore, the editor considered current terminal conditions, analyzed the yard layout and plans in details, transferred the concepts from traditional artificial management mode and thoughts turned into systemic thinking and methods, and built the yard management model and yard strategies of Automated terminal to improve storage efficiency, storage quality, yard utilization, mechanical scheduling level, and handling efficiency.The purpose of this article is with the aid of Qingdao port group to build Asia's first fully automated container terminal, to study and design the container terminal yard layout, to do some research based on the actual production operation and theory analysis on terminal operation and management, to summarize the current defects of traditional container terminal and analyzes the reasons. Meanwhile, combining with the demand of automation terminal operation it designed automation terminal yard layout and operation process, to provide theoretical reference to the Qingdao port currently in the preparation of constructing automation container terminal yard.
