Abstract/Summary:
As a representative of emerging economies, "BRICS" has been important driver of world economic development. Especially after the financial crisis caused by American supreme mortgage crisis sweeping the global, "BRICS" makes a great contribution to the recovery of world economy. As one of the troika of economy, trade plays an irreplaceable role in the economic growth of "BRICS". If we can make full use of the trade complementarity and strengthen trade cooperation among member states, positive effect will be produced to the economic growth of "BRICS" and contribution will be made to the long-term stability of the world economy. In addition, if the "BRICS" become China’s main trading partners, we can not only reduce China’s reliance on Europe, the United States and Japan’s trade, but also improve China’s trade structure as a whole. The paper is divided into six parts to discuss. The first part is the introduction of the paper, writing background, research purpose and method are introduced. Then relevant theories of trade complementarity and three measurement standard complementary including dominant comparative advantage index and trade complementarity’s index, trade specialization coefficient are introduced. The third is the present trade condition of China and Brazil, China and Russia, China and India, and South Africa, to analyze the bilateral trade volume and trade structure and trade Integration. The fourth part is the focus of this paper, using three measurement standards mentioned in Chapter Two, we empirically analyze the trade complementarities between China and member states of "BRICS", in which we use a large number of related trade data to ensure the objectivity and accuracy of the conclusion. We put forward obstacles to trade cooperation among "BRICS" member states and corresponding policy recommendations in the fifth part.In this paper, first I utilize dominant comparative advantage index, modified dominant comparative advantage index and trade complementarity index to measure the trade complementarity between China and member states of "BRICS".Then I classify trade complementary type by trade specialization coefficient, and I find that there exist differences goods trade complementary among different member states,so it is with the trade complementary type. China and Brazil, India, South Africa are intra-industrial complementary in SITC6(manufactured goods classified by material). However, China and Russia are inter-industrial complementary in SITC0(foods and live animals). However,by using two-digit method of TSC(trade specialization coefficient), we could find that the trade of all goods from SITC6(manufactured goods classified by material)between China and Brazil, China and India, China and south Africa is inter-industrary trade, and the trade of all goods from SITC0(foods and live animals) between China and Russia is inter-industrary trade. Therefore,we find the goods trade between China and member states of "BRICS" is inter-industrary trade, and the trade cooperation pattern is still at an early stage.
