With the acceleration of rural modernization process and the modern market economy gradually permeate into the countryside, traditional rural society was deeply affected by modern civilization. Rural society is a place where the traditional and the modern mingle with each other. Based on existed cultural theory and specific conditions of rural society, this research studied the autonomous supply mechanism of rural public goods in terms of economy, relations and values by documentary study and interview method. Taking the construction of M village's roads as an example, we explored the successful mechanism of rural public goods. Contrary to the previous theory hold that the traditional and modern culture factors exert single influence on the supply mechanism of rural public goods, and admit the binary opposition of traditional and modern culture. Through comparing the two different reasons which lead to different results, the study explored culture's influence on self-support mechanism of rural public goods from the perspective of cultural theory, revealed the cultural factors which can contribute to the self-support of rural public goods. Thus this study revealed the specific cultural elements in cultural toolkit. The study found that high income and the increased public spirit was the main factor to promote building road; The rationalization of human relations has played a positive role, enhance efficiency of punishment and reduce the cost of coordination; the stabilization of life expectation and the increase of labor can improve the efficiency of road construction. Besides, from the macroscopic perspective, aimed at one-sided understanding to traditional and modern culture existed in Chinese rural studies. The study pointed out that we should be based on the rural reality to see the actual role of traditional and modern cultures, reveals how the traditional culture and modern culture to interact with each other to promote self-support of public goods supply. The study found that the traditional culture and modern culture interact with each other to form self-support mechanism of rural public goods. In different node of social change, this interaction lead to different results of self-support. By understanding the current rural society correctly, we should set up correct attitude towards the two kinds of cultures in rural society, making policies to benefit the development of rural society during transformation period.
