In the past few years,with the development of satellite communication technology and the continuous growth of the market demand,machine-to-machine(M2M)communication over satellite has captured more and more interest from communication researchers and research Institutes.M2M communication over satellite has many applications,such as smart grid,environmental monitoring and emergency management.Unlike the traditional human-to-human(H2H)communication,M2M communication has many very unique features such as numerous objects,small data transmission and low cost.Therefore,the development of satellite M2M communication poses challenges to the traditional satellite communication technologies.A critical research subject for satellite M2M communication is to deal with the massive access of numerous objects.In this letter,wo firstly introduce the development process and current situation of the M2M communication.And the characteristic and application scenarios of M2M communication over satellite will be described in detail.Then we research the traditional classical multiple access technologies in satellite communication system,and analyse the limitation of those multiple access technologies when they are used in M2M communication over satellite.We also study the application of the capture effect in the field of multiple access technologies over satellite communication system.We analyse the characteristics,influencing factors and application principles of the capture effect,and introduce some channel models commonly used to study the capture effect.Finally,we propose a noval multiple access scheme for massive objects dubbed Multi-Carrier Cooperative Slotted ALOHA(MC-CSA),and details the system structure,protocol flow and mathematical model of MC-CSA.Then,the performance of MC-CSA is evaluated via mathematical analysis and computer simulations.It is shown that MC-CSA outperforms the typical multiple access schemes in terms of normalized throughput and package loss rate performance,and the performance of MC-CSA can be further improved by the capture effect.It is shown that MC-CSA is suitable for M2M communication over satellite.
