All-optical wavelength conversion is one of the important technologies for optical WDM network interoperability and upgrade.Electro-absorption modulator has a wide conversion bandwidth in all-optical multi-wavelength conversion.The response rate of the EAM is very fast,and it also has a good capacity in noise absorption.In this paper,we study the conversion of optical signal from wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)to time division multiplexing(TDM)by using electro-absorption modulator.This work is supported by the TSTC Project under Contract 12 JC ZDJC20700.A multi-wavelength light source which has a wide optical bandwidth(1530nm-1580nm)is designed as the optical signal generator.The wavelength conversion experiment is made within a range of conversion efficiency.And the signals are transformed into the wavelength of 1550 nm.In the conversion experiments,five groups of multi-wavelength light sources with different wavelengths are used.And it is concluded that: the light with short wavelength has a better performance in the conversion than the long one.Then,we use the dispersion in a long fiber to make the multi-wavelength optical signals separated in time domain.And then the wavelength conversion experiments are realized.The main contents of this paper are as follows:1.Five types of devices and the principles of these devices for all-optical wavelength conversion techniques are introduced.The pros and cons of the electro-absorption modulator are analyzed in multi-wavelength conversion.A brief overview of the related research and work of this thesis are listed one by one.2.The process of optical absorption and the principle of wavelength conversion in the EAM are introduced in detail.Static absorption curves of the EAM are measured.3.The whole experimental system is described,including that: the design of multi-wavelength light source,the generation of optical signal pulse,the time delay of multi-wavelength optical signal and the wavelength conversion in the EAM.In the experiment,the wavelength of signal light range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm,and the conversion results of five groups of multi-wavelength light sources are obtained.A group of multi-wavelength signal light which has a narrow pulse width is delayed by a long fiber.Then the final multi-wavelength WDM signals are converted to TDM signal at the single wavelength at 1550 nm successfully and the results are analyzed and explained.
