Luneberg lens antennas have many advantages such as high gain,low sidelobe,broadband,multi-beam and large scanning angle.They have extensive applications in satel ite communications,electronic warfare,etc.However,their bulky shape and heavy mass limit practical applications.To overcome these disadvantages,a new dielectric planar Luneberg lens with good performance is designed on the base of optical transformation in this paper,which is miniaturized and easily fixed.Firstly,the concept and development of Luneberg lens are described.The basic principle and analysis method are introduced accordingly.Four layer analysis methods are researched in detail by HFSS simulation.Secondly,optical transformation from spherical Luneberg lens to planar Luneberg lens is introduced and the transform formula is deduced.The design parameters are optimized.Simulated results show that the new compressed planar Luneberg lens have high gain,low sidelobe and broadband radiation characteristics as the original ones.Finally,the planar Luneberg lens application in multi-beam antennas is discussed.The multi-beam performances are analyzed for linear and circular array configuration at different focal positions.
