The presence of snipers in modern conflicts lead to high insecurity for the soldiers. The location of snipers has become the basic tasks to protect soldiers against the threat in peacekeeping and other military activities. To find the snipers quickly and reduce the threat, all sorts of counter-sniper system is presented. The acoustic sniper localization system have been extensively developed and widely used as the cheapest and the most accurate counter-sniper system.An acoustic location system that can locate the sniper’s location in real-time is presented in this paper. The two acoustic phenomena(the muzzle blast and the ballistic shockwave) which is generated by the rifle gunshot were analyzed, and the location algorithm is designed by the time of arrival estimates of the two acoustic phenomena. The hardware system is to use modular design, and the design of signal conditioner, DSP signal processing circuit, the digital compass and the WIFI module interface and the power management is designed in detail. The system used the TMS320F28335 as the processing core, the signal would enter the A/D acquisition after being amplified and the filter. The DSP signal processing completes the data acceptance, the detection and recognition of signal and the calculating of the target. A digital compass is used to provide the current posture and orientation of the system.The final result will be sent to the Android mobile phone display platform via the WIFI module. The microphone array uses a collapsible structure and the design of the system optimizes the structure of the Li-battery power supply management to achieve a system of low power consumption, high integration and portability. The Android phone software is designed as the system visual interface.Finally, an experiment was taken to test the performance of the system. Under relatively harsh environment, when the system was placed with different angles, the mean square error of the azimuth measuring does not exceed 5°; when the system was placed at different distances within 300m range,the measured variance of the system are not more than 5°. The result proved that the location system has a high location accuracy and good stability.
