As one of the essential components of Internet of Things(IoT)and Intelligent Transport System(ITS).Vehicular Ad Hoc Network(VANET)has attracted increasing number of concerns from both academia and industry. The standardization of IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 1609.x also guided the developing direction of VANET research.Although uncountable VANET researches could be indexed on Google or IEEE Xplore, most of them depends on the heritages of Wireless Ad Hoc Network research.Since that, those kind of works was born with two problems:lacking a realistic model to mimic the mobile behaviors of cars and failing to concern the overall impacts from the channel access mechanism in IEEE 802.11p MAC layer. In order to solve the two problems aforementioned and provide a more realistic transmission capacity theory for the linear VANET,we conduct this research.Transmission capacity is an important indicator of VANET performance,it is always the hot-spot while the hard-core of VANET research. In this paper we involve the Car-following Model, which is a well-developed theory in transport research area,to describe the distribution of vehicles.Meanwhile,a space modeling for the EDCA mechanism is used by us to develop the mathematical model of linear VANET.Based on our model,we propose the upper bound of transmission capacity in linear VANET according to an extreme distribution of simultaneous transmitting vehicles in which no more simultaneous transmitting vehicles could be added in.We conduct the simulations and compare our result with a previous work, the simulation results show that our upper bound is more valid in the case with higher density of vehicles. The upper bound will tightly constrain the maximal instantaneous transmission capacity achieved in simulations too.We also proposed the upper bound of linear VANET transmission capacity under Rayleigh fading channels. The simulation results indicate that the upper bound in Rayleigh fading constrains the average transmission capacity of linear VANET very well.At last we introduce the elementary expression of linear VANET's transmission capacity.Due to the complexity of mathematics, this expression still require further optimization or simplification. In a word, based on more realistic vehicle distribution and specific 802.11p MAC layer mechanisms modeling,we proposed the upper bound of transmission capacity in linear VANET under Large-scale fading channel and Rayleigh fading channel respectively. These work might make a little contribution to the work researching the ultimate theory of the transmission capacity of VANET.
