MIMO technology can take full use of space resources and significantly improve spectral efficiency and channel capacity without increasing system bandwidth and antenna transmit power.Thus MIMO technology has been widely studied in the next generation mobile communication systems.In recent years,MIMO technology has been developed rapidly.There has emerged numerous outstanding research on the MIMO system theory and properties.However,due to the complexity and randomness of the radio propagation environment,MIMO wireless communication technology,which has advantages in high performance and large capacity,is also facing challenges from wireless channel characteristics.Thus there are still lots of issues that need further research and verification.MIMO channel modeling is one of the key research points.First we summarize the major channel modeling schemes.The MIMO channel modeling can be classified into physical models and analytical models with regard to the channel modeling approaches.On the basis of the classification,several common channel modeling will be introduced.Based on the analysis and summarize of the channel models,we proposed two points that can be improved.The two improvements are three-dimensional extension and the joint distribution of elevation and azimuth.On the basis of the existing ellipsoid model and Regular-Shaped Geometry-Based Stochastic Model(RS-GBSM),we proposed a new 3D multi-ellipsoid model,which is called Geometrical Multi-Ellipsoid Based Stochastic Model(GMEBSM).This model realized the extension from two-dimensional model to three-dimensional model.By using the von Mises Fisher(VMF)distribution,the proposed model has the ability to jointly consider the azimuth and elevation angles.Ellipsoids with different propagation delays are assumed to obey exponential distribution.We propose the concept of the reflection efficiency to distinguish different ellipsoids.Based on the numerical results,we analysis the statistical characteristics of the multi-ellipsoid channel model.Analysis results show that the space-time correlation is affected by time separation,antenna spacing and wireless channel characteristics.The multi-ellipsoid channel model has the same statistical characteristics with the reference model.
