An Analysis Of The Internpersonal Meanings In The Awarded News Commentaries Of English&Chinese

Commentaries of the Chinese News Award and the Pulitzer Prize are all represent the world's highest level for commentary writing,and its economic commentaries are all special and functional works for the news career.From topic selecting to arranging,from article composing to reading,these works all carried strong emotions of linguistic features and communication elements.So,it is a certain path for researchers to use Systemic-Functional Linguistics to do a micro analysis,and Journalism&Communication principles to do a macro analysis.This thesis has choose 20 pieces of respective works to be research objects from the Chi-nese News Award and the Pulitzer Prize,then use Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics to analyse the Interpersonal meanings from both mood and modal resources.This counter analysis cares about the mood types,modal types,and modal measurements chosen.Moreo-ver,this research through Martin's Appraisal theory to support the research,through a quanti-tative&qualitative analysis to discover the spreading features of the interpersonal resources in the chosen commentaries in both Chinese News Award and Pulitzer Prize.The author also connects the differences between China and American in politics,economics,societies and cultures and interprets them one after another.Based on this concept,the thesis uses Journal-ism&Communication theories to analyse the communication functions of the interpersonal meanings in news commentaries.The author of this thesis has discovered the similarities&differences of the interpersonal meanings in both Chinese News Award and Pulitzer Prize.The similarities can be distin-guished from below:all the chosen commentaries all use a huge amount of indicative moods and interrogative moods;there are also a frequent use of the modal measurements in high,middle and low.The differences can be distinguished from below:mood resources,the Chi-nese News Award commentaries use little imperative moods,but it cannot be found in Pulitzer Prize commentaries.In modal measurement,the former use a huge amount of high value modal verbs,but the latter use middle value modal verbs.In the modal orientation,the former shows a clear subjective and a none-clear objective,but the latter shows a explicit objective and a none-explicit subjective.As for the use of the Appraisal resources,the former uses judgement resources,well the latter uses intervention resources;the former uses contraction to show the authority and the latter uses expansion to show objective of the commentary works.We it comes to the communication functions,the interpersonal meanings are used in the dif-ferent moods and modals of the commentary to realize the functions of construction of frames,formation of symbols,influences of audiences in communication activities.
