A rising number of software enterprises start to improve the quality of the software from the source of development. They have adopted several measures to balance the quality and efficiency, and selected some sophisticated quality guarantee system or management tools to help them achieve such goals. Detecting the fault can ensure the software quality, but the fault itself is more valuable than it appears to be. It can be applied to provide assessment evidence to the development of software, solve the problem and prevent more faults occurred at the late stage.The company is engaging in setting up the development of the new products, which internal code named as “Terminator”, due to the new profit searching for the upgrading of the products. In order to improve the quality of the products from the source, the company has deducted a whole quality working process with the determination from the management level and project team. The article selects a core method, which is suitable for the local environment, to help to complete the whole quality management. Orthogonal Defect Classification(i.e. ODC) is a quick analysis method to detecting the root of the fault. The article selects the ODC, with the comparison on many pros and cons of several analysis methods. The main purpose for ODC method is to help to dig for the root of the problems from the faults of the software. The fault, which being detected from the testing is the direct reflection from the software quality, while the fault analysis is the perfect gateway for collecting the quality information. The concept is well matching requirements and local environment.The article mainly describes the whole ODC method application process in the Terminator product development. With the project further being carried forward, the localization is continuously improved. First the ODC method is considered as one of the eight core natures of the defect definition. Though the documents and practical study of the examples in the industry, the orthogonal result impact is defined, and tail the nature of the problems, which the Terminator cannot reflect objectively and correctly, with the comparison on the local practice. Also some projects, which is the part of the nature are re-defined to suit for the local environment. Second, considering there is merely defect management tool, which is used, generally, to support the ODC method, and also, the high price for the re-development of the under-applied the defect management tool by the company, the excel, is applied to bear the responsibility to summarize and analyze all the work of the ODC data, as the Intermediate means. Then, the clear definitions are granted to the ODC implement steps, its staff and deliverables, to ensure all process and transformations of the jobs well done. The final analysis process is divided into two steps. Charts are generated from statistic data from the two perspectives of project management and quality management. Then, the final conclusion is obtained from the analysis on the charts.ODC method, which is used in the three iteration development of the Terminator, continuously combine the defect nature to local environment, to make all analysis charts to reflect situations, and optimize and improve it in the whole process. From the perspective of the project management, the development and test staff should take the responsibility of the defect impact and Severity distribution chart, respectively, to reflect the working quality of the development and test staff, and determine whether the current and following work would be smoothly carried on, though the project development trend chart. From the respective of the quality management, the charts, such as the defect leakage statistics, product's weak module statistics, and etc. should be applied to reflect the current quality of the software and evaluate the quality risk.
