Wind Driven Optimization(WDO) algorithm is a new swarm intelligent global optimization algorithm, which was proposed by Bayraktar Z et al in 2010. This algorithm simulates the motion of air particles in the atmosphere. Compared with other intelligent optimization algorithms, the WDO algorithm has a lot of advantages, such as strong robustness, clear concept, easy implementation and high efficiency. It is suitable for solving multi-dimensional and multi-modal problems. It also can handle continuous and discrete optimization problems. More and more researchers pay attention to the WDO algorithm study. Electromagnetic synthesis problem is always complex mathematical problem with complex model structure and nonlinear objective function. As a result of it, many traditional optimization algorithms no longer meet the requirements of high accuracy and efficiency of electromagnetic synthesis. Since Bayraktar Z et al used the WDO algorithm to optimize a kind of double side artificial magnetic conductor in 2010, there are more and more applications of the WDO algorithm in electromagnetic synthesis.However, each algorithm possesses strengths and weaknesses, WDO algorithm also performs poor convergence in the settlement of part of multimodal problem. In order to improve the situation, several improved WDO algorithms were introduced in this paper, and the best improved algorithm was applied to several electromagnetic problems. The main results of this paper can be summarized as follows:(1) Five kinds of WDO algorithms with different mutation strategies were presented,and the numerical simulation experiments were carried out to analyze the performance.Finally, we found out the WDOWM algorithm can balance the global exploration and local exploitation ability.(2) Double learning mechanism was introduced into WDO algorithm to form a double layer mutation strategy WDO algorithm. Classical test functions were used to test and analyze its performance.(3) Uniform design method was introduced to determine the parameters combination,so as to improve the calculation efficiency, and then achieved the continuous development and improvement of the algorithm.(4) The WDO algorithm and WDOWM algorithm were applied to the linear array pattern synthesis. The results of WDOWM algorithm had lower sidelobe level and null,which was superior to the existing literature.(5) The WDO algorithm and WDOWM algorithm were applied to the impedance matching network synthesis. The curves of11 S by WDOWM algorithm were all satisfied with the design requirements. Compared with the results of WDO algorithm, the simulation results of WDOWM algorithm were more valuable for engineering application.(6) An electromagnetic optimization method based on WDOWM algorithm and HFSS software was proposed. Using the HFSS-MATLAB-API interface program to achieve high efficiency electromagnetic simulation, the electromagnetic optimization method was applied to optimize the design of a double layer EBG structure filter.
