As a kind of renewable and clean energy, wind energy has been widespread concerned by countries around the world. Recently, the global wind power installed capacity is growing exponentially. However, it is shown that wind turbines will have a serious impact on air traffic control radar system due to the complex electromagnetic scattering properties. Therefore,simulating and analyzing the characteristics of wind farm clutter, and then suppressing wind turbines clutter, are of great significance for ensuring the air traffic safety.Firstly, the mathematical model of wind turbine echo is established based on the scattering points superposition theory. Meanwhile, the radar cross section(RCS) properties of wind turbine are simulated and analyzed by electromagnetic simulation software FEKO. Then the hybrid model are proposed to simulate the wind turbine echo accurately, which combines the advantages of mathematical model and FEKO software, and takes into account the impact of reflection coefficient of the blade and mast, azimuth angle and elevation angle of incident wave and other complex factors. So it can realize the wind turbine echo simulation at any observation points precisely. Secondly, the RCS properties of wind turbine and micro-Doppler characteristics caused by the rotation blade are simulated and analyzed. The simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed simulation model in comparison with theoretical derivation and the field measurements. In addition, wind farms are often composed of many wind turbines in which multipath scattering between different wind turbines may be existed.So the multipath scattering models of wind farm are studied in the paper. The wind farm echo and their micro-Doppler characteristics are also simulated and analyzed. Finally, the basic principles of mitigating the wind turbine clutter based on matching pursuit(MP) algorithm are elaborated. In order to reduce the computation burden, the traditional MP algorithm is improved. The wind turbine rotation rate and radar azimuth are firstly estimated based on the priori information, then MP algorithm are applied to mitigate the wind farm clutter.
