Power line Communication refers to the communication mode which uses power line as the transmission medium. In recent years, the studies on broadband power line communication have greatly improved the communication rate of power line communication, which satisfied the business requirements of High speed Internet. Since the natural advantages of widespread power lines, there is a huge development room for power line communication. As the most mature and stable standard in power line communications industry, the IEEE 1901 standard provides a unified standard for medium access control layer and the physical layer mechanisms of broadband power line communication, which applys to both in-home network and access network scenarios. The standard has been widely used in abroad markets, but due to the differences between domestic and foreign power line communication application environment, more in-depth research focusing on the performance of the IEEE 1901 standard is needed when it is implemented to the domestic market,.The main objective of this paper is to conduct the simulation design, the performance study and assessment of the MAC mechanism over the IEEE 1901 protocol. In this article, the in-home network is chosen as the main object of study. Firstly, the structure of the network topology and protocol stacks of IEEE 1901 is introduced in detail, focused on the concrete analysis of the channel access mechanism and data transmission mechanism of the MAC layer; Secondly, this paper introduces the basic implementation mechanism and main function module of MAC layer simulation platform; Then, based on the simulation platform, the IEEE 1901 MAC layer protocol simulation system is constructed. The system designs channel access and data transmission mechanism of the MAC layer, which achieves the beacon cycle planning and two types of access mechanisms as TDMA and CSMA, in addition, the data encapsulation and fragmentation with packaging implementation process are also designed; Finally, based on the protocol simulation system, simulation and test work of the MAC layer on the IEEE 1901 protocol mechanism is completed, with a variety of test scenarios under different channel access ways, the corresponding network throughput, delay and jitter, extending to shake the index to measure, and the simulation results are analyzed to evaluate the mechanism of MAC layer performance under different test scenarios. The simulation results verify the correctness of the developed MAC layer of the IEEE 1901 protocol simulation system, it shows that the MAC protocol can support high-speed data transmission on power line medium, it also indicates that channel access methods can be chosen flexibly according to practical application scenarios.
