With the rapid development of modern radar technology, digital radar focusing on modularity and standardization has been developed in the direction of software radar. Software radar is a new kind of radar system with "software" as the core, which has characteristics like high-performance, flexibility, expansibility and easy to upgrade and so on. Software radio technology, from its proposal to present, is widely used in wireless communications with its superior "software" technical characteristics. It has good versatility, openness, can produce a variety of signals flexibly through software programming, control and it can conduct analytic processing such as signal modulation, demodulation, encoding, decoding to promote the realization of functions and make it more convenient, and also to enhance the system upgrades, to bring greater development space and possibilities. Therefore, the software radio technology is in full compliance to the radar requirements of the software.The ionosphere is an important part of the Earth space, and its changes have impact on human space activities. The study of the ionosphere can promote the development and perfection of aerospace technology. Currently used ionosphere detection equipment are mainly traditional radar equipment. The space environment and the working environment in which the radar exists are complex, at the same time, the detected target is changing, and the traditional hardware is designed for certain specific target, which makes it inconvenient and inflexible to change conversion target detection and detection methods. By studying the ionosphere of the software radar detection technology, software ionospheric radar detection system is proposed based on software radio technology, it has a small size, light weight, low power transmitter, distant detection, diversified detected waveform, and, can be vehicle-mounted, etc. It also has a high degree of software-based system, good reconfigurability and flexibility.In this paper, we use software radio technology and Universal Software Radio Peripheral(USRP) to study the ionosphere detection technology. Firstly, the system research background, ionosphere detection technology research status, and software radio platforms are introduced, and the principles and advantages are analyzed and studied. Secondly, it introduces the overall design plan of software ionospheric radar detection system, software module design and waveform design. Finally, closed-loop fixed frequency experiment, closed-loop sweep frequency experiment and, open-loop sweep experiment on software ionospheric radar systems are respectively conducted. The experimental results are analyzed and the system is proved feasible. At last, this system is summarized and prospects for future development is also mentioned.
