With the rapid development of China's power industry, power line communication network coverage area has been increasing, in order to provide more diverse and more high-speed applications, power line communication technology research is facing great challenges. At present, the application of power line communication in our country mainly concentrates in the narrow band filed. Therefore, it is very important to study the technology of the narrow band power line communication deeply. G3 protocol is the global narrow band power line communication protocol designed for the smart grid, the research and simulation of G3 protocol is necessary for the development of China's national narrow band power line communication protocol.This paper mainly studies the MAC layer mechanism of G3 protocol, and then builds a protocol simulation system, simulates the G3 MAC layer mechanism using the system. First of all, this paper gives an overall introduction of G3 protocol, and then introduces its usage scenarios, protocol stack model, frame format and primitives, furthermore, the MAC layer channel access mechanism is analyzed deeply. Secondly, the basic platform used in this paper is introduced in detail. Subsequently, based on the MAC layer mechanism of G3 protocol and the idea of discrete event driven programming, this paper designs the related events and interfaces, and then completes building the simulation system, accomplishes G3 protocol MAC layer channel access mechanism and data transmission strategy. Finally, after verifying the reliability of the system, this paper designs a number of scenarios to measure the throughput and channel utilization of network, time delay and delay jitter of packets, and then gives analysis of these results. Simulation results verify the correctness of the developed simulation system, and show that the channel access mechanism of G3 protocol can effectively coordinate the channel access of each device in a conflict area, so the study of G3 protocol has certain reference value for the development of our national narrow band power line communication protocol.
