With the rapid development of 3G/4G mobile communication systems, higher demands are proposed on the performance of the working systems. Being the transformer between electromagnetic waves and electric signals, the antenna has significant effects on the performance of the whole network. The base station antenna will inevitably be required to meet the requirement of the next mobile communication systems. However, considering the fact that the mobile communication systems working in different frequency bands will coexist for a long time, the base station antennas with the characteristics of wideband, compact size, low profile and planar structure become the hotpot nowadays.A brief introduction on the basic technology of base station antenna is presented at the beginning. Then, based on the development tendency of the base station antenna, four novel designs have been proposed in this thesis.Firstly, in order to solve the problems such as narrow bandwidth, non-planar structure and large-size radiator in exiting base station antennas, a wideband dual-polarized planar base station antenna is introduced. The antenna can obtain a wide impedance bandwidth of 1.7~2.7GHz and can effectively reduce the size of the radiator, providing a new idea to reduce the coupling between the array units. Secondly, solving the issues of high profile and non-planar, a low-profile dual-polarized planar antenna for base stations is presented. The antenna can obtain a extremely low profile of 0.127?0 and a wide band of 2.40~2.70 GHz. Finally, two design have been proposed to miniaturize the traditional large-size reflector so that the antenna can be used into small base station. At the first design, the antenna can operate at a wide band of 1.7~2.7GHz. Besides, it has a extremely small overall dimensions of 0.59?0×0.59?0×0.2?0. At the second design, by loading reflective meta-surface(RMS), the antenna can obtain a wide band of 1.7~2.2GHz and a compact size of 0.61?0×0.61?0×0.16?0 simultaneously.
