English vocabulary teaching plays an important part in English language teaching.In current English vocabulary teaching,most English teachers still use a mechanized and simplex teaching model in their English vocabulary teaching,by which they only lead the students to read the words,interpret the words' meaning,and then ask the students to recite and dictate.Besides,the meaning of lexical collocation is seldom emphasized and the context where vocabulary is used is often ignored.In this way,it is difficult to develop the students' ability of understanding the words' meaning exactly and putting them into practice.The presentation of Chunk Theory solved the problem of the traditional English vocabulary teaching system,in which grammar and vocabulary teaching are often separated,and the theory provides a new methodology for instructing English vocabulary teaching.In allusion to present English vocabulary teaching situation,this research applies Chunk Theory to senior high school English vocabulary teaching,so as to improve teaching efficiency and students' comprehensive ability to use language.Based on Chunk Theory,a wide range of relative literature articles,an investigation is made to survey the situation of English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools in this research,which is made by means of questionnaire and interview,and the main respondents are the Grade One students taught by the author in one of middle schools in Lianyuan.Besides,some backbone English teachers of the English teaching and research group are also the object of the research.And through the analysis of data results,the main problems existing in current English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools have been found out and attribution analysis is further made.To improve the present situation of English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools,based on Chunk Theory and the classification of the vocabulary chunk,some English vocabulary teaching and learning strategies for teachers and students in senior high schools have been put forward:(1)focusing on the central word of the chunks and their collocation,(2)manifesting the co-occurrence of chunks and context,(3)accumulating and using chunks according to pragmatic function.Then specific teaching steps and a teaching case have been designed,and some teaching strategies under the instruction of Chunk Theory are actually applied to the English vocabulary teaching in senior high school.Lastly,through the comparison of before-after test results the teaching effect has been shown.Based on the results of this research,the following conclusions have been drawn: On the one hand,the application of Chunk Theory can improve the students' memory and vocabulary learning efficiency.On the other hand,the English vocabulary teaching based on Chunk Theory may be used for reference in English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools.
