Discourses And Strategies

Social constructionism is adopted as theoretical approach in the study,qualitative research methods were employed to conduct in-depth interviews with the transgenders,partial hetersexuals groups together with other gender minorities in Shanghai city.The present study was designed to investigate the interactions between transgenders and other different groups,the discourse around transgender,also the coping strategies of transgender people when facing the discourse.The lived experiences transgenders has been presented in this study,at the same time,hoping to appeal to more scholars concerned about the academic research of transgenders.The results of the current study suggest that,different discourses among transgenders existed in different fields,thus their coping strategies differ.In the workplace,transgenders mainly faced the discourse of Discrimination,they chose to fight,be silent or work out a compromise.Medical authority takes over the medical field,the discourse in the field is Patients,some transgenders stood unswervingly to change their gender,the others tended to abandon this idea.In the family field,paternity controls discourse power,Filial Piety becomes the main discourse,thus transgenders have two different coping strategies—either sparing no expense to cut away from family or concealing their real identity.In the virtual space,the simultaneous existence of Support and Discrimination made transgenders to publicize their own individuality or looking for support within transgender groups.Some efforts to resist oppressive discourses were also involved in the study:Social public,medical institution,social work organizations,sexual minorities and transgenders themselves are supposed to work together.
