Many defects exist in current English writing assessing system which belongs to summative evaluation.Students' writings are just evaluated from teacher's perspective and graded once,thus making teachers excessively emphasize on writing results,ignoring students' writing process.It is not suitable enough for student's long-term progress in writing performance.So it is urgent to reform the current assessing system of English writing.Portfolio assessment,as a form of formative assessment,can help students monitor their writing process and progress through rewriting and revising.In order to figure out the influence of portfolio assessment on English writing learning and teaching,the following three questions are proposed.(1)What are effects of portfolio assessment on students' writing performance?(2)What are the effects of portfolio assessment on students' self-reflection ability in writing?(3)What kind of influence does portfolio assessment exert on students' learning interests and confidence in writing?To conduct the experiment smoothly,two parallel classes(EC and CC)in Grade Nine with a total number of 90 in No.2 Middle school of Nanchang were picked up.Two different types of questionnaires handed out to students in EC provided answers to the question 2 and 3 respectively.An interview was adopted among six students picked from the EC to get a better understanding of their changes after the application of portfolio assessment.To figure out the changes on students' writing performance before and after the experiment,pre-test and post-test were adopted.Based on the analysis of experimental data by SPSS21.0,what have been found are as follows.First of all,it is true that students' writing complexity,accuracy and fluency have been improved during the process of creating their own writing portfolios.Besides,students' self-reflection ability in writing has seen improvements due to the application of portfolio assessment.What's more,positive changes have happen to students' interests and confidence in English writing.Therefore,Portfolio assessment does play a significant role in English writing.Students will not just wait for the score on their compositions.They can feel the progress during the writing process and find out their own strengths and weaknesses in writing.Their self-reflection ability can be improved which affects their writing performance.Students become more interested and confident in writing,thus making teacher's teaching process more relaxed and efficient.Once applied to junior high school,the teaching design will inject new vitality to English writing.Although there are some shortages and limitations in this research,implications for the innovation in assessing method for writing teaching have been provided.
