Research On The Cultural Value And Educational Function Of University Motto

The university motto was given a unique school spirit of the university,and continued a long tempered struggle from the history of the brilliant,the condensation of the previous generation of university successor expectations and caution.The university motto is the concentrated expression of university culture.University culture is the spiritual soil for the existence and growth of motto,and both are interdependent and mutually constructed.As the soul of university culture,motto is the essence of university culture and the representation of university culture.A list of Chinese university mottos is a history of the development of Chinese universities.Although the school motto is short,it contains rich connotation and infinite value.This paper hopes to take the university motto as the breakthrough point,once again to face the university culture and to dig the value of university culture education.The university motto of our country was born late.Although it has had its essence since the ancient academy,the form was quoted from Japan in the end of Qing Dynasty and developed under the influence of the missionary university of the Republic of China.First of all,by using the comparative induction method to study the current university motto,we can find that the distinctive feature of university motto is to carry forward the traditional culture.Secondly,through the research of profound cultural value of the modern university motto,it is found that morality,self-reliance,self-improvement and pursuit of freedom are the hotspot and the mainstream.Again,through the research,we can understand that the motto has special function of education in training qualified builders and reliable successors,improving the soft power of university alert,strengthening youth ideal,encouraging students’ enterprising spirit,disciplining the behavior of students,and influencing students’ sentiment and so on with the growth of the students in the university motto more highlighting the unique charm of cultural education.Witnessing the brilliant education in the Anti-Japanese War with " faithful and fortitude" is the enlightenment from the university’s motto." “ Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” inspires students to strive for self-improvement in their suffering is model demonstration of motto of Tsinghua University.We can peep at the spirit of Peking University from the May 4th Movement,etc..Finally,by studying the feasibility path of educational function,it is proposed that we must pay attention to the recognition and practice of school motto in the construction of university culture,which can exert the significance and value of the motto in the practice of personnel training.
