As an important part of high school English teaching, writing plays a decisive role in determining the success or failure of English learning. However,in the current curriculum mode, this writing skill, which should have a high status, has not received due attention. In their actual teaching practice, although many teachers understand the importance of cultivating students' writing ability, due to the tight schedule of the curriculum, and in order to achieve the goal of teaching new classes, they often can't afford to spend much time teaching their students how to write. Therefore, the time for guiding the students' writing is also very limited. As a teacher this author know that if the students want to write good English articles, they must have a lot of English readings as a basis. However, for the rural high school students this author teaches,it is not easy for them to complete their homework,so we cannot expect them to spend a lot of time on extracurricular reading and writing practice. In view of this situation, teachers need to study how to use the limited reading resources at hand and make full use of their value and function. As an English teacher of a rural high school, this author tries to explore how to use the reading resources effectively in the teaching practice, and adopt the method of teaching through integrating reading and writing to improve students' English writing ability.Based on the theory concerning the relationship between reading and writing and input-output theory at home and abroad, and under the guidance of the new curriculum reform and the college entrance examination requirements in Jiangsu Province, this paper explores whether the English writing level and achievement of rural high school students can be improved by the mode of integrating reading and writing. The experiment, which lasted 20 weeks, selected 82 Grade Two students of two parallel classes from Zhutang High School of Jiangyin City with Class One as the experimental group and Class Two as the control group. The research methods included experimental methods, questionnaires and student interviews. The experimental class adopted the method of teaching through integrating reading and writing while the control class used the traditional teaching method. From the experiment the following conclusions are reached:(1)The integration of reading and writing can not only increase the students' interest in English reading, but also help to improve the students' English writing level.(2)In English classes the method of teaching writing through reading and practising writing spark the students' writing inspiration and give them a sense of achievement.(3)The students' marking and commenting each other's compositions followed by the teacher's evaluation of compositions has raised the students' enthusiasm to write good articles and enhanced their ability to appreciate good compositions, which lays a foundation for writing good articles. The author hopes the findings of this study can provide some reference for the teaching of English writing in rural high schools.
