English writing is a complex integrative process of comprehensive skills, which is hard for many learners to master and apply in a short period, especially for the students in senior middle schools. Some of them demonstrate a deficiency in English writing. The method of integrating writing with reading would be one possible solution to release students' worries about English writing and improve the ability of it. The thesis mainly proved the existing influence laid on writing by English teaching work of reading. And meanwhile a new method for improving the ability of English writing has been put forward in the thesis. That is, combining reading activities with writing practice reasonably in English reading classes. The thesis consists of six parts. The first part provides a general survey of current situation of English reading and writing in senior middle schools and analyses the problems appeared in students' writing exercises. Then it hypothesizes that there exists close relationship between reading and writing and it is necessary to integrate writing with teaching of reading. Meanwhile it shows that the aims and the significance of the study are to prove that it is effective and efficient to combine writing with reading in the teaching work of reading in senior middle schools. The second part mainly reviews the results of the studies made in such a field previously. Some of the prior studies were on the basis of their native languages and some were made in the environment of English as a second language. Although some recent studies were carried out in the environment of English as a foreign language, they were all in colleges or universities instead of in senior middle schools. Thereby, SEFC as teaching material, the study in the thesis was carried out in Tianshui Normal Middle School.Part three introduces the definitions of reading and writing. According to the natures of reading and writing, they both are complex intellectual processes of cognitive psychology.Part four provides the theoretical background for the study by elaborating the essential theories relevant to English reading and writing. The Schema Theory tells us that the relevant schemata in people's mind have to be activated to understand, accept and produce information when s/he is reading and writing. While Krashen and Swain proposed the Comprehensible Input Hypothesis and the Comprehensible Output Hypothesis separately, which elaborate the feasibility of combining readingand writing. The fifth part is a vital part in the thesis. It concentrates on the experiment. On bringing forward persuasive evidence, an experiment of teaching reading and writing, which lasted for one term, was carried out on 99 students in Grade two in Tianshui Normal Middle School. In the experiment the students in EC were trained to learn the reading materials with more reading strategies and skills which were more student-centered and combining with a lot of writing exercises, while the method used in the controlled class was more teacher-centered and the students were taught to learn the texts just using the traditional method of teaching reading without any writing exercises. Analyzed by SPSS, the result of the experiment showed that the performances of the subjects in EC, both on reading and writing, were better significantly than those of the students in CC. It means that the method of teaching reading combining with writing can improve the ability of English writing in senior middle schools. The sixth part analyzes and discusses the result of the experiment further and draws the conclusion: English reading and writing are related closely and combining writing with reading in the classes of teaching English in senior middle schools can improve the students' ability of English writing.
