As a kind of language-learning strategies,meta-cognitive strategies are used to monitor and regulate cognitive strategies,which involve planning the subsequent activity,monitoring the efficiency of cognitive operation and evaluating the learning process.In other words,meta-cognitive strategies involve planning strategies,monitoring strategies and evaluating strategies.Using meta-cognitive strategies enables learners to manage the learning process effectively and is helpful for learners to develop the ability of independent study.As one of the four basic skills,reading enables learners to learn more about the world,broaden the horizons and develop values.Besides,reading plays an important part in College Entrance Examination.Therefore,improving students' reading abilities is one of the most important tasks in English teaching.However,many students are not good at managing and evaluating their learning process,which leads to their poor performance in reading.In view of what has been talked,it is necessary to train students how to use meta-cognitive strategies while reading and raise students' awareness of using meta-cognitive strategies.The research is intended to answer the following questions:(1)Is meta-cognitive strategies training helpful for students to raise the awareness of using meta-cognitive strategies?(2)Is meta-cognitive strategies training helpful for students to improve English reading performance?(3)Which of the three strategies,namely planning strategies,monitoring strategies and evaluating strategies are most relevant to students' English reading performance? In order to answer the three questions,students of Class1 & Class 3 were chosen as the subjects,which were two parallel classes taught by the author.The author conducted a questionnaire of meta-cognitive strategies and a test of English reading at first and found that there was no significant difference in reading performance and the use of meta-cognitive strategies between the two classes.Then the author integrated meta-cognitive strategies training in English reading teaching in Class1 while in Class3 the author didn't involve any meta-cognitive strategies training.After ten weeks' training,a questionnaire and test were carried out again in both classes.Based on the analysis of the results of the questionnaires and tests,the author draws the following conclusions:(1)Meta-cognitive strategies training is helpful for students to raise the awareness of using meta-cognitive strategies.(2)Students' reading performance can be improved through meta-cognitive strategies training.(3)Monitoring strategies are most relevant to students' reading performance.The findings of the study have proved the positive effect of meta-cognitive strategies on English reading and teachers are supposed to attach great importance to cultivating students' awareness of using meta-cognitive strategies and integrate effective reading methods to improve students' English reading performance.
