The new curriculum standards of English for high school students require the students of higher comprehensive skills,including those of listening,speaking,reading and writing.There are many factors affecting the development of the skills,among which is vocabulary.For students,vocabulary,the basis of language abilities,is one of the most difficult to learn.For teachers,the vocabulary teaching in senior high school is also a hot topic to explore.In order to enlarge students' vocabulary,we may make full use of newspapers to help them review the previously-learnt words,accumulate new words and construct individual learning strategies.Based on the Input Hypothesis,Involvement Load Hypothesis and constructivism learning theory,the author chooses the newspaper Learning English as a supplement to reading,and puts forward the following two research questions:1.Can English newspaper reading stimulate students' learning interest and encourage students to acquire vocabulary?2.Can English newspaper reading help students construct their own vocabulary learning strategies? If yes,in what aspects?The teaching experiment was conducted in Xinfeng Middle School in Dafeng District,Yancheng.Based on this,the paper studies the changes of two classes.Before the experiment,a survey was conducted to study the current situation of vocabulary learning,and a vocabulary test was given to two classes.After the experiment,the two classes would participate in a similar after-experiment vocabulary test,and meanwhile a few of students would receive a interview in regard to the experiment.The study finds,On the one hand,English newspaper reading can stimulate the students' interest in vocabulary learning,help them build confidence,and better master vocabulary,because this kind of learning is based on the cognitive characteristics of students.On the other hand,by using the newspaper Learning English under the guidance of the teacher,students not only become skilled in keeping track of the latest information,but also expand their vocabulary by flexibly employing various sorts of reading strategies and construct their own vocabulary strategies.The results of this study have some implications for English vocabulary leaning in senior high school.Applying newspaper reading to vocabulary learning is of help for students to improve their reading skills as well as expand vocabulary and eventually equips them with adequate strategies to form their own individual ones.
