Compared with the other subjects,grammar teaching is the most controversial part in the history of foreign language teaching,which mainly focuses on whether it should be taught and how to teach.In China,the attitude towards English grammar teaching has experienced emphasis and support to rejection and lose as the pendulum.In 2003,The “Ordinary Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(experimental)”(referred to as the "New Curriculum Standards” hereinafter),amended and promulgated by the Ministry of Education,clearly pointed out “the focus of the English curriculum reform is to change the tendency that English course has been emphasizing on grammar and vocabulary knowledge,ignoring cultivation of students' actual language using ability…” that is,New Curriculum Standards aims to change the traditional grammar teaching methods rather than give it up simply and design corresponding requirements and regulations on grammar teaching—as an integral part of the language knowledge,grammar is the important foundation of students' listening,speaking,reading and writing language skills;The teacher must keep an close eye on the students' emotions and attitude on learning grammar and strengthen the guidance of students' grammar learning strategies and infiltrate cultural knowledge into grammar teaching,and at the same time,take good use of the textbooks,optimize grammar teaching methods and evaluation system.However,New Curriculum Standards has been carried out in Jilin city for over 10 years since 2003.How is the present situation of its practical implementation on grammar teaching in senior high schools? According to the specific requirements of the New Curriculum Standards on grammar teaching and based on the grammar teaching experience at home and abroad for reference as well as the author's teaching practice,the paper conducts an investigation for this problem.This paper,mainly applying questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview methods,studies the implementation of New Curriculum Standards requirements on grammar teaching in senior high schools.Firstly,the paper chooses 72 English teachers from three high schools with different levels as the study objects and carries out the questionnaire based on 4dimensions—the course target,teaching materials,teaching methods and the evaluation system.Secondly,the classroom observation and interview,6 English teachers and 10 students at random selection,are applied as the supplementary means.Classroom observation aims to know how teachers should guide students to master grammar learning strategies and use cultural penetrating strategies and apply appropriate teaching methods into the grammarteaching.Finally,the thesis reaches a conclusion with qualitative and quantitative approaches based on the survey data,and in turn,puts forward some feasible grammar teaching suggestions,such as cultivating students' positive emotions and attitude,strengthening teachers' consciousness of training students' grammar learning strategies,penetrating the cultural knowledge into the grammar teaching,increasing more effective grammar teaching strategies and optimizing the evaluation approaches.The paper is divided into five parts.The first part is introduction,including the research background,the aim and significance of the study and the basic framework of the thesis.The second part is the literature review.It includes related concepts and the requirements about grammar teaching in New Curriculum Standards and some researches at home and abroad.The third part is the study design,which includes study questions,study subjects and study methods.The forth part is results and analysis,which mainly analyzes the present situation of practical implementation of New Curriculum Standards on grammar teaching in high school.The fifth part is conclusion,it includes the major findings of this paper,teaching suggestions,the limitations of the study and the significance of further study.
