English grammar teaching is a very important part in English teaching. It may determine the successor failure of English teaching to a great degree. Nowadays there are two unilateral phenomena of Englishgrammar teaching in junior high schools. With the development of new curriculum reform in our country,many teachers are against English grammar teaching. They think grammar is no longer important, whichleads to students’ ignorance of their English grammar learning. They are weak for the basic patterns ofsentence and grammar knowledge as well as their oral and written expression cannot be accurately used.Moreover, some other teachers put too much emphasis on their English grammar teaching. Therefore, weshould find out the real problems in English grammar teaching, then put forward new suggestions to helpthe teachers teach grammar much better and help the students learn grammar well.This study takes Luoyang No.23Junior High School as an example for analysis. So three researchquestions are put forward:(1)What is the current situation of English grammar teaching in junior highschools?(2)What are the major problems of English grammar teaching in junior high schools?(3)What are the main ways to deal with these problems of English grammar teaching in junior high schools?Based upon these research questions, this study adopts questionnaires and interviews as the major researchmethods, and then analyzes the collected data.The findings of this study indicate:(1) Most English teachers and students in junior high schoolsstill regard grammar as the basic element of teaching and learning English.(2) The interest andconfidence of many students are not high in the process of English grammar learning. For teachers, themethods of English grammar teaching are simple and lacking in variety.(3) English teachers should takeproper methods and pay attention to the emotion factors of students, in order to cultivate their interests andconfidence in English grammar learning.This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is introduction. It presents research background, research motivation and purpose, andthe organization of the thesis. Chapter Two is the literature review. It delivers a thorough literature review on the study of grammarand grammar teaching both at home and abroad.Chapter Three includes the introduction, research questions, research subjects, research methods,research instruments and research procedures.Chapter Four is the main part of this thesis. It analyzes and discusses the questionnaires, the classroomobservations and the interviews carefully.Chapter Five is the conclusion of this study. It summarizes the main findings of this thesis, and thenthis study puts forward some suggestions for the teachers. |
