As the only one who has charged Harvard University twice,Derek Bok has made great achievements and contributions impelled a lot of revolution and innovation in his 21-year career.He has led and coordinate a large number of reformations in Harvard University,which has been exerted a tremendous influence on the higher education around the world.Not only that,Bok also has unique perspective on major issues of reformation and development in the contemporary higher education,based on era background and his practical experience during his charge of Harvard university,which has been published a large number of far-reaching Higher education works.Based on the management practice of Harvard University and Bok’s books,this dissertation studies higher education ideology of Bok.The author found that both the United States higher education and the world higher education are facing practical problems,including the unbalance of university functions,diversification,marketization and professionalism of higher education and other issues.In practice,Bok reformed Harvard University fruitful in the following aspects: the pursuit of equality of education;the remodeling of undergraduate education;the speeding up the internationalization of higher education;the transformation of professional colleges;the adjustment of the organization;the exploration of the source of funding,with the use of the eclectic of principle and flexibility.In theory,Bok blends rationalism and utilitarianism.He probed the purpose and function,the external relations and the internal management of higher education systematically and deeply.Bok thought higher education institutions(HEIs)as an open ivory tower,a transport station of talents and a place insisting academic,which should lead in the market as a positive role at the same time to guard against and prevent commercialization,seek government for support and serve the government governance actively at the same time to guard against and prevent politicization.Finally,combining with the current status of Chinese higher education,the direction to the reform of higher education in our country has been given. |
