With development of economic globalization and industrial transformation,international service trade is becoming knowledge and technology intensive,and educational service trade has increasing dynamic too,with its form and content becoming richer,and proportion rising.Countries become highly valued and greatly involved.However,the market is imbalance,with developed countries like the US becoming the main educational exporters,while China having relatively large adverse trade balance.There is a gap existing in higher educational service trade between China and the US,but few research has specific data and index demonstration on their international competiveness,either has exploration on deeper factors behind it.Therefore,this paper started from Comparative Advantage Theory,trying to figure out development features of China and the US higher educational service trade.It based on four types of trade analysis with international student education and foreign university cooperation as focuses,to find out status difference and existing problems between two countries.Second,it calculated China and the US educational service trade competiveness,using International Market Share Index,Trade Competitive Index and Revealed Comparative Advantage Index,with other countries taken as reference.By showing the international competiveness pattern,it aimed at finding both countries' market positions in higher educational service trade.Last but important,based on Porter's Theory of Competitive Advantage,the paper used influencing factors analysis from six aspects-innovation capability,human capital investment,information& technology level,quality support,government education budget,policies and regulations.Two case studies of foreign university cooperation were also used to explore root causes of the problem.Then advice like more specific and multi-field combination was given to further research.It will help utilize China's comparative advantages,to develop its educational export capability and build up soft power.Meanwhile,it serves to China higher institutions' goal to construct high quality education and create its own international brands.
