| Mongolia is the second largest landlocked country in the world and one of China’s most important neighbors to the north. After the Mongolian Revolution of 1990,Mongolians became more religiously active, causing the number and variety of religious groups to dramatically increase. The long-term social impact of religion has also continued to become more pronounced.Shamanism today forms the basis of Mongolian religions in addition to other religions like Tibetan Buddism, and it serves as the dominant religious practice in this regionalized country.Shamanism is the religious belief of primordial Mongols, and it includes its own unique history, world view and belief system.Shaman concepts have deep roots in traditional culture, and nearly all Mongolians refer to it in their daily lives. In recent years, the Mongolian shaman religion has transcended its former status to become a system of personal beliefs, extended familial rituals and organizations.A close relationship of Shicheng exists not only between Mongol tribesmen, but religious groups have also gradually adopted a similar form of Shicheng,an organized belief system which involves,in part, mentoring between members of the community. In this paper I use fieldwork conducted in Ulanbator,Mongolia, theories based in religious anthropology and cultural anthropology,my participant observation of everyday life for shamans in Mongolia and the operational mode of shaman organizations. In article I discuss the treatment, blessing and ecstasy ceremony held by shamans and the concept behind the practice: the shaman hosts all kinds of ceremonies for his guardian spirit——Wengon can hourn power and help promote one in heaven, which can help the shaman to fly more freely;next,I researched the birth and practice of the three influential tribal shamans;I then observed the activities of shaman organizations, including their formation and operation;finally I discuss the characteristics of shaman organizations and the different ways in which they are viewed by the public.I hope that with this introduction to some of the most basic aspects of shamanistic ceremony, people will acknowledge the development of contemporary Mongolian shamanism, and the attitudes towards the current state of shamanism held by native peoples will continue to evolve and develop. |
