Vocabulary,as the information carrier of language,is an indispensable part when learners study a new language. With the New Curriculum Standards published, more and more vocabulary are required by learners to remember and use.Previous researches(Lanson & Hogben,1996;Wang Jinquan & Chen Jinzhong,2005)have indicated that many students feel anxious when learning vocabulary and their learning method is monotonous. As a result, students' vocabulary ability is adversely affected. The present research takes the junior high school students as the subjects.Through questionnaire, interview and English test, the study is trying to answer these three questions below:1.What is the overall situation of using vocabulary strategies for junior one students?2.Can strategies training enhance students' vocabulary mastery?3.Whether students' comprehensive ability can improve in English final test after the training? To answer the three questions, the author conducts a questionnaire survey on two parallel classes of Wan'an Middle School in Yuncheng City,Shanxi Province. The results show that the knowledge of students' memory strategies is scarce by the influence of traditional teaching. Therefore, their learning method is monotonous. What is more, many students do not develop the habit of writing and reading, which makes their English learning performance decline. In view of the problems reflected by the questionnaire, the author do the experiment in these two parallel classes.Class A is the control class, and the Class B is the experimental class.Class A is taught in the traditional teaching method. And in the Class B,vocabulary memory strategies training is added. The teaching lasts about 14 weeks. After the training,SPSS17.0 is used to analyze and compare the results of the vocabulary test and the final test of the two classes. It is found by the present study that the Class B results are significantly higher than Class A in the vocabulary test. The final test can test the students' comprehensive analysis and application ability, which presents the same tendency. The overall ability of the students in the experimental class is higher than that of the control class. This study is an empirical study to cultivate the awareness of using vocabulary according to students' own needs. However, the research process and the results still have many limitations, which provide some new thinking and direction for the later research.
