English language teaching is a process of language communication,which emphasizes the importance of English language input and output.One of the educational objectives of English curriculum is to develop students' comprehensive skills and communicative ability by class activities in English classes.It requires that English teachers should pay special attention to the cultivation of students' practical abilities of using language,and change the tendency of stressing too much on the explanation and initiation of the language knowledge.It emphasizes that English teachers should motivate the students' learning interests,and promotes the cooperative learning and the exploring learning to develop students' expressing abilities in English communication.But by observing the actual English classes,the author finds that there are still a large number of students who are keeping silent while others are active in the seemingly lively classes.Therefore,the study of class silence has a great theoretical and practical significance to the development of students and teachers' teaching.Class silence is a relatively new research topic that was started late in China,and most of the studies have been forced on the university students,which are rarely involving the students of junior middle schools,especially the students in the rural areas.Therefore,the author selects one hundred students and six English teachers of Fushan No.2 middle school in Shanxi respectively as the research subjects of this thesis,takes the research instruments like classroom observation,post-interview and questionnaire,tries to explore the silent status of English classes in rural junior middle school,analyzes types and causes of class silence on the basis of the results,and then puts forward concrete strategies for reducing negative silence in English classes.From the analysis of survey data by the statistical software of SPSS17.0,the author gets the conclusion as follows:Firstly,serious silence phenomenon of English class exists in the rural junior middle school.Secondly,there are three types of class silence and the causes of the English class silence in the rural areas are diversified.According to the results of this study,the authorsuggests that English teachers of rural junior middle school should adopt targeted strategies to reduce the negative effects of English class silence.At last,the author hopes that these strategies can help students and teachers to reduce the English class silence phenomenon of rural junior middle school.
