Language is a tool,and the ultimate purpose of learning a language is to communicate.So the task of English teaching is not only to teach students the basic knowledge,but also to develop their ability to use the knowledge to communicate.In China,classroom is the main venues for students to learn English and use English.But in high school English classroom,there are few students actively participating in classroom activities,and they often use silence to respond to the teachers' questions.The negative classroom silence become a big obstacle for students to learn English well.So students' negative silence in English class is researched in this thesis.Classroom observation and questionnaire are adopted to investigate the present situation of high school English classroom silence and its reasons.Classroom observation results show that the high school English classroom silence phenomenon is widespread.And high school students in Hezhang Experimental School are asked to finish the questionnaire,and the reasons are analyzed according to the results.Corresponding to the reasons,countermeasures are proposed.
