With the continuous progress of the curriculum reform of English,the tradition teachers-oriented English teaching methods can not meet the demands put forward by new curriculum standards,which encourages students' ability of comprehensive development and sustainable development for the future.The new curriculum standards put emphasis on students-oriented mode of teaching.Various learning strategies should be adopted to cultivate students' awareness and ability of independent study.As for primary students who are in the infancy of English learning,taking appropriate teaching model and method can help them form good learning habits,master some learning methods at the early stage.What's more,it can satisfy the needs of emotional teaching goals and students' allover development.Cooperative learning is a kind of effective teaching mode.Conducted in the way of teaching practice,questionnaires and interviews,this research discuss the application of cooperative learning in English in primary schools.Students as respondents of the practice and questionnaires are to investigate the impacts of cooperative study on academic performance,emotional attitude and learning methods.Teachers as interviewees are aimed at investigating their views on cooperative learning.Combining with classroom observations,problems in applying the mode can be discovered and solutions can be proposed.This study indicates that,applying cooperative learning mode for a long time can improve students'academic performance and promote their awareness of self-learning,master the skills of cooperating and methods of independent study.Although teachers realize the advantages of cooperative learning and willing to try,it turned out to be problematic,such as too much teaching preparations,students not fully engaged,inappropriate evaluations or managements,illegibility of teachers'roles and so on.At the end of this thesis,causes of problems of students' participation,managements of cooperative learning and teachers' positioning are analyzed and solutions are further put forward:improving teaching design based on the objectives,optimizing evaluation systems and enhancing teachers' quality.The author hopes more primary English teachers are willing to adopt cooperative learning mode in routine teaching to promote teaching quality and develop students' consciousness and ability of independent learning.
