Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning and is the key to English learning as well.However,memorizing English words has become the main obstacle to students' English learning.How to improve students' interest in vocabulary learning has become one of the important goals of English teaching.Mind map,as a new thinking mode and method of study,has been widely applied to English vocabulary teaching.How to effectively use mind map in teaching has become a great concern for teachers.Based on Constructivism,and Theory of Brain Science,the author proposes the teaching plan based on mind map assisting English vocabulary teaching and then attempts to apply it into English teaching.This research addressed the following three questions:First,can mind map improve students' interests in memorizing English vocabulary?Second,what's the effect of applying mind map to English vocabulary teaching on students' vocabulary memorization in junior high school?Third,can mind map improve the efficiency of English vocabulary teaching?The research took Yifu Experimental Junior High School in Tianshui as the experimental school,two classes from Grade Nine were the parallel classes,a total of154 students in the two classes were selected as the experimental subjects in random.Class 7 was chosen as the experimental class(EC)and Class 1 as the control class(CC).An experiment was carried out in two classes by employing experiment,questionnaires and interviews for a semester.Before the experiment,a final test was taken in two natural classes in Grade Eight,the result showed that they were at the same level.Mind map was applied to vocabulary teaching in the experimental class.The traditional approach was instructed in the control class.After the experiment,another test wastaken in the two classes.The results of tests and questionnaires,interview were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 and Excel office software,which showed that application of mind map can improve the efficiency of English vocabulary teaching and the application of mind map to junior English vocabulary teaching is helpful to improve students' vocabulary memory.What's more,using mind map can improve students' interest in English vocabulary memory.
