English writing reflects students' comprehensive ability of using language.Feedback is an important means to help students improve their English writing proficiency.In China,teacher feedback is one of the most common forms of feedback that can be accepted in English writing teaching of senior high school.However,in recent years,peer feedback receives more and more attention.Based on the theory of the Zone of Proximal Development and Process Writing Theory,this study compares teacher feedback with peer feedback which aims to make better use of feedback to improve the effectiveness of feedback.The specific research questions are as follows:(1)What are students' attitudes toward teacher feedback and peer feedback?(2)What are the effects of teacher feedback and peer feedback on students' revision of compositions?(3)Which feedback is more effective to improve students' English writing achievements,teacher feedback or peer feedback?One hundred and twenty students in Chencang Senior High School in Baoji city are involved in this study.Class 9 and Class 10 are randomly divided into teacher feedback class and peer feedback class.Before the experiment,there is no significant difference between the two classes in English writing achievements through the analysis of pre-test scores.During the experiment,there is no difference in teaching materials,course schedule,writing tasks and English teacher.After one-semester experiment,post-test,questionnaires and semi-structured interviews are conducted in both teacher feedback class and peer feedback class.After that,the collected data are analyzed from quantitative and qualitative perspectives.The major findings can be summarized as follows:(1)Students believe in teacher feedback.What's more,students hold the opinion that teacher feedback is more effective in the aspect of grammar and content.Students prefer peer feedback,andstudents think that peer feedback is more effective in the aspect of vocabulary.(2)Students used more teacher feedback than peer feedback in their revision,and teacher feedback can lead to more meaning changes.Although utilization of peer feedback is lower than teacher feedback,and most of peer feedback used are at the level of surface change,it can leads to more self revision,and the effectiveness of revision is higher than that of teacher feedback class.Besides,this study shows that students' understanding of feedback and the explicitness of feedback have a great influence on students' revision.(3)In teacher feedback class,students' English writing achievements get a higher improvement.Although students' English writing achievements get a lower improvement,the gaps of students' English writing achievements are fallen in peer feedback class.In summary,this study finds out some advantages and disadvantages of teacher feedback and peer feedback,and suggests that the effects of feedback on students' revision,students' attitudes toward feedback as well as students' understanding of feedback should be paid great attention to in the process of providing teacher feedback and peer feedback.Therefore,feedback can help to improve students' English writing proficiency.
