The Subversion Of Traditional Gender Image In Katy Perry's Music Videos

The masculine female image,feminine male image and cross-dressing image in Katy Perry's music videos provide a different perspective of understanding gender construction.In this thesis,it is argued that gender is constructed rather than innate or fixed,and these images portrayed in Perry's music videos are subversive to the traditional gender image.The first chapter deals with the masculine women image created in Perry' s videos.This chapter is obliged to analyze the new women roles and their characteristics in detail to illustrate that the new women are the subversion to the traditional female image.The second chapter is to present the feminine men characters.Based on Cornell's masculinity theories,this chapter focuses on the passive gender roles and characteristics of male to show that the male image is opposite from the traditional one.The third chapter reveals how Perry blurs the traditional gender roles by cross-dressing characters.The detailed analysis of Perry' s male-female disguises will be made to show the uncertainty of gender and provide a new perspective for the understanding of gender roles.Judith Butler' s theory of Performativity is to be adopted to illustrate the argument.
