Reading can raise spirit and lay a solid foundation for lifelong learning for a person.Under the circumstances that the whole world is deepening the reform of fundamental education, literacy is concerned about international competence.Reading literacy is the core of basic language literacy,we need to improve students' reading engagement and reading performance. In the modern society,it important to guide students to learn reading, enjoy reading and develop reading habits. What's more, reading makes people lead a high-quality spiritual life, which is the key point of Chinese language education and humanistic education. The childhood is the key period of reading development, but also the important period of shaping the habit of reading.Besides,as the most important place where students live, the family affect the words and deeds of children in different ways.In order to know more about the influence of family environment on reading engagement, this study researches the influence of family environment on pupils' reading behavior,by selecting students in four primary schools of N City as samples, and using the research methods of questionnaire survey and interview. In detail,as one of the key words, family environment covers objective family environment and subjective family environment, including family structure, social economic status and so on.In addition, this study put focus on the behaviors of reading engagement, also the quantity and quality of reading engagement. The item of reading engagement covers reading time, network reading, habitual reading engagement and reflective reading engagement. This study proposes four research questions:(1)What is the influence of family environment on reading time based on the control of irrelevant variables?(2)What is the influence of family environment on network reading based on the control of irrelevant variables?(3)What is the influence of family environment on habitual reading engagement?(4)What is the influence of family environment on reflective reading engagement?Based on the above questions, this study draws eight conclusions through the descriptive analysis and regression analysis of statistics. The conclusions as follows:(1)The family environment has a great influence on students' reading engagement.Family environment is an important factor which affects the primary school students'reading engagement.Whether the objective family environment or the subjective family environment, all of which have a significant impact on reading engagement.(2)Primary school students have more reading time during weekends and holidays than during workdays.Plenty of time is the basic requirement for students to enjoy reading.Compared with busy workdays, students can spend more time on free reading during weekends and holidays.(3)The performance of habitual reading engagement is better than the performance of reflective reading engagement. In terms of reading engagement, students are involved in reading autonomously and actively, showing enthusiasm and enjoyment. While the interaction with others and the text is not prominent, especially lack of creativity in adapting text and continuing writing text.(4)Primary school students seldom read by computer or mobile phone,as parents generally don't support network reading.Out of consideration for the development of children, parents take negative attitude towards network reading.(5)There is a weak direct influence of individual characteristics on reading engagement of primary school students. The individual characteristics, such as gender, grade, and whether native or not, have effects on reading engagement. For example, gender has a significant impact on habitual reading engagement.Besides, the grade and whether native or not also have significant influence on the frequency of network reading. But overall, the impact is weak and will be reduced by the effect of family environment variables.(6)The school characteristics have a weak direct impact on students' reading engagement.Different levels of schools have a significant impact on reading time, habitual reading engagement and reflective reading engagement, while network reading is not significantly affected. The effect of school characteristics also will be diluted by the family environment variables.(7)Objective family environment has a significant influence on the students' reading engagement. The detailed objective family environment variables which concludes the possession of cars and books have great effect on reading engagement. The more books a family owns, the longer time kids spend on reading, and the stronger initiative and interaction kids perform.(8)Subjective family environment has a significant influence on the students' reading engagement. The influence of subjective family environment on reading engagement can dilute the direct influence of subjective family environment on reading engagement.Different parent-child cultural activities influence the reading engagement in different degree.Specifically, parent's reading behavior, which has a significant impact on reflective reading engagement, has no significant effect on habitual reading engagement. What's more, the more frequently parents take children to the library or bookstore, the longer children spare to read and the more actively children involve.According to the above findings, this study proposes four suggestions:first,to guarantee adequate reading time through reducing study load and promoting interest of reading, second,to create a literary environment by family-school cooperation in various ways, third,to enrich collection of family books by a variety of ways, fourth,to read effectively and purposefully based on an comprehensive understanding of network reading.
