English reading,as one of the four essential skills,plays an important role in English learning.However,in elementary English classrooms,reading class comes after listening and speaking class.Although the textbook contains a reading part,teachers tend to use the method of teaching speaking and listening in the reading class.Such way of teaching fails to give students scientific guidance in reading and also fails to arouse their reading interests.Practice to combine schema theory with reading teaching has been going for years in both junior and senior high schools.Such practice lays a base for the PWP reading teaching model,namely the pre-reading,while-reading and post-reading.But in elementary schools,PWP is not widely used as in middle schools.Reading teaching is not a mechanical process as it is decided by the genres and formats of the text as well as other factors such as the learners'level and teachers' teaching style.Taking the function of the three parts of PWP into account,the author attempts to explore the designing skills through integrating PWP with listening,speaking,reading and writing.The empirical study was conducted in two parallel classes in grade four,Malanshan Primary School in Kaifu District,Changsha and it lasted for 8 months.This thesis digs into the following two questions:1)By adopting the PWP reading model integrating listening,speaking,reading and writing,what effects do it have on students'reading interests,reading confidence,reading strategy,extracurricular learning and reading habits?2)By adopting the PWP reading model integrating listening,speaking,reading and writing,what effects do it have on students,reading proficiency?In the empirical study,two parallel classes were selected as a experimental class and a control class.The former was taught in the way of integrating PWP reading teaching model with listening,speaking,reading and writing,while the later received the traditional way of teaching.The experiment lasted for 8 weeks and the data were collected from pretest,post-test and questionnaires.The research data were analyzed by the statistical software SPSS 21.0 and Microsoft Excel.Moreover,in order to give further confirmation to the conclusion,an interview was given to some teachers attending the experiment.The study reveals that l)reading interests,confidence,strategy and habits and extracurricular learning of the students from experimental class have been improved,while students from the control class have no obvious improvement in these four aspects;2)reading proficiency of the students from experimental class has been improved apparently while those from control class hasn't got much distinct improvement.This research indicates that adopting the PWP reading model integrating listening,speaking,writing and reading benefits reading class and this way of teaching is feasible and effective.
