Reading plays a significant role in English learning.Reading teaching not only focuses on students' logic thinking,but also stresses the application of language for students.In addition,English reading takes up larger percentage in College Entrance Examination,so it is critical to improve students' reading ability.In recent years The New Standard English Curriculum of Full-time Ordinary High School(2013)proposes that teachers should cultivate students' ability of critical reading,and at the same time,they should focus on reading skills and independent leaning of students.However,the current teaching of English reading has many problems.For example,teaching methods are boring and lack of creativity,and the interactions between teachers and students are not satisfying.These problems inevitably lead to the effects that students' interests are too low.As a result,the quality of the class descends and students' reading scores are low.The paper aims to explore whether students' reading interests will be stimulated and reading scores will be improved with applying the multimodal teaching approach to the teaching of English reading.The multimodal teaching approach is based on Systematic Functional Linguistics,the Cognitive Load Theory and Constructivism Theory.The multimodal teaching approach advocates that students should make full use of senses to learn in class,and it stresses students'independent and cooperative learning.What's more,teachers should combine multimodal with multimedia equipments to make use of multimodal factors such as videos,pictures,sounds,colors,actions and some other modals to design the teaching activities.In addition,teachers let students take part in teaching activities so as to cultivate students' initiative and enthusiasm,which aims to promote class teaching.This research studies on English reading teaching in senior high school and it aims to answer the following three research questions:(1)What are the effects of multimodal teaching approach on students' learning attitudes towards English reading?(2)What are the influences of multimodal teaching approach on students' English reading scores?(3)Compared with the traditional teaching of English reading,what advantages do the new teaching approach possess?The research made an experiment in Senior High School of Panshan county,Panjin city,Liaoning province.The number of subjects was 112 and they were from the two classes in Grade one.Class 5 is experimental class and Class 7 is controlled class.Before the experiment,the teacher carried out an exam in the two classes and the average scores of the exam were similar between the two classes which indicated the two classes were in similar level and had no obvious differences.The experimental class was taught by multimodal teaching approach,and the controlled class was instructed by the traditional teaching method.What's more,the author taught the same teaching material which was New Senior English for China Students' Book 1 in the two classes.The research instruments were pre-questionnaire,post-questionnaire,pre-test,post-test and interview.The research lasted 12 weeks.The results show that students' learning of English reading has obvious changes under the guidance of multimodal teaching approach.From the angle of questionnaires,students'interests of learning improve a lot compared with the previous study,and students can take part in activities organized by the teacher.Through the results of the pre-test and post-test,which can prove that students from the experimental class have greater effects than the controlled class because students' scores of English reading are relatively much higher than that of the controlled class.From the data of interview,which can conclude most students have positive attitudes to the multimodal teaching approach because it can cultivate independent and cooperative learning ability for them.Teachers can design all kinds of teaching procedures concerned with the topic to stimulate students' interests of learning of English reading.In addition,the multimodal teaching approach stresses the application of reading skills.As a result,the multimodal teaching approach has obvious and positive influences on the teaching of English reading.All in all,it has relatively significant implications towards the teaching of English reading.
