Since the implementation of the reform and opening up policy,Chinese college students have been eager to study abroad, and their purpose has also shifted from irrational to rational.Japanese history also witnessed a tendency to pursue oversea study that is similar to the present China. But currently young Japanese, especially Japanese college students are rather conservative about oversea study. With college students from Hainan University and International University of Kagoshima as respondents, this thesis carried out an empirical study of Chinese and Japanese college students' willingness to study abroad, and explored the causes of differences concerning this from the perspectives of two nations' study-abroad policies, economic development, family atmosphere, hungry spirit, and social atmosphere. The first chapter introduced research background, defined key terms in this thesis, and presented research methods and the organization of this study. The second chapter is literature review,in which relevant literature regarding willingness to study abroad has been introduced. The third and fourth chapters analyzed the questionnaires administered to Chinese and Japanese college students respectively. The fifth chapter compared the results gained from the above-mentioned questionnaires, with an emphasis on exploring the co-efficiency between the afore-mentioned factors and two countries' college students'willingness to study abroad. This sixth chapter examined the differences in willingness to study aboard between Chinese and Japanese university students,on the basis of the results of questionnaires. From the perspective of policies, since the 1980s,Japan issued many policies aimed to attract foreign students, while they did not attach importance to encourage domestic students to pursue their oversea study. From the viewpoint of economy,China and Japan differ in their economic developments.Comparatively speaking,China witnessed rapid economic development so that university students are more willing to study abroad. From the perspective of family, since oversea study requires parents'support, their attitudes have a marked influence on their children' willingness to study abroad.Taking psychology into account, the author found that young Chinese have a stronger hungry spirit compared with their Japanese counterparts, since Japan is already a developed country, while China is still developing. In the end, this thesis analyzed the social predispositions of two countries, young people in a global context, and investigated its impact on their willingness to study abroad.Since contemporary young Japanese become more and more introvert, most of them are reluctant to pursue their oversea study.By contrast, since in China, globalization has been taking place,Chinese college students are more willing to study abroad in order to broadens their visions.
